Why should I get my wisdom teeth removed?
Wisdom teeth extractions are normally recommended if:
- your teeth are impacted - this means that they do not have enough room to come in normally or are in the wrong position to erupt straight;
- your teeth have come out at a wrong angle and are pushing or causing damage to your other teeth;
- you have cavities and/or infection because your teeth are too far back and difficult to brush and floss properly;
- you are getting orthodontic treatment or other dental procedures.
An oral exam and a panoramic x-ray will allow the dentist to determine whether the molars pose a risk to your oral health and therefore must be extracted and what kind of procedure will be required.
When is the best time to extract wisdom teeth
Wisdom teeth, known as the third molars, usually erupt in the late teens or early twenties. It is very important to see the dentist regularly so he can monitor them closely as these may be prone to problems during their eruption mainly due to the limited space available in the mouth for them.
When teeth are extracted during the teenage years or in the early 20s, healing is easier and there are fewer complications. How are wisdom teeth removed?
Before any procedure, we will enquire about your overall heath. Be sure to mention any health problem that you have including allergies, list all medications that you take on a regular basis and ask all your questions.
Depending on your individual condition and level of stress, we may recommend some form of sedation in addition to the local anesthetic required for the procedure. You should always plan to have someone to drive you home after the surgery in our clinique on West Island.
Once the anesthesia has been administered, the dentist will expose the wisdom teeth by making a small incision in the gum and then carefully extract them. In some cases, if a tooth is abnormally positioned, it may be necessary to break it into smaller pieces. Once the teeth are extracted, the wound in the gum is stitched up.
Once the procedure is complete, we will provide you with the postoperative recommendations and send you home to rest.
